Villa Sapphire
Villa Sapphire By Eden Villas
The Place : Galle, Sri Lanka
Just a short drive from the golden beaches and lively cafes of Talpe, Villa Sapphire stands out as a truly unique escape on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Built on the grounds of an old stone quarry, this spacious villa is designed for families or groups who want a mix of privacy, comfort, and a bit of adventure, all in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature. Instead of one big house, Villa Mine is made up of separate pavilions set among lush gardens, giving each guest room its own space and special view, some overlooking the private lake, others the pool or the green hills.
Inside the Stay
Stepping into Villa Sapphire, the first thing that grabs your attention is the sheer scale and unique layout of the property. Built across the grounds of a former quarry and perched above a serene, emerald lake, Villa Mine is thoughtfully designed as a collection of pavilions that both maximize privacy and nurture togetherness. The estate covers nearly 9,000 square meters, and each structure flows naturally into the surrounding gardens, lake, and cliffside views.
The villa comfortably sleeps up to 18 guests, making it ideal for extended families, groups of friends, or even small celebrations. There are seven air-conditioned bedrooms in total: six king suites, spread across separate buildings, each featuring king beds, ensuite bathrooms, and private terraces or balconies that open onto lush gardens, poolside lawns, or tranquil lake vistas. The seventh is a dedicated bunk room, kitted out with six beds, perfect for children or teenagers traveling together. This arrangement means every adult couple can relax in their own suite, while kids can enjoy the comfort (and fun) of their own shared space.
The heart of Villa Mine is the main open-plan living and dining pavilion, where soaring ceilings, glass doors, and simple, contemporary Sri Lankan architecture keep you connected to nature at every turn. Mornings tend to start here, with the group gathering for breakfast around the long dining table as sunlight filters through the trees and across the pool. The living area stretches effortlessly outdoors, turning the infinity pool, sunbathing deck, and garden terraces into focal points for daytime lounging or afternoon swims with sweeping views over the old quarry lake and, in the distance, the Indian Ocean.
Each of the king suites in the villa has its own personality, some with moody, dramatic interiors and deep standalone bathtubs, others brighter and more airy, all softened by fresh linen, lush greenery visible from bed, and easy access to terraces. The children’s bunk room is cheerful and spacious, with plenty of light and room for play.
The estate also offers a dedicated games pavilion with a pool table lounge and another king suite beneath, a TV/cinema room, and all the comforts you need for working remotely or spreading out during downtime. Outdoors, you’ll discover Villa Sapphire’s signature features a sparkling infinity pool on the cliff edge, the swimmable quarry lake below (mostly a visual highlight, but beautiful for morning reflections or adventure photos), and the skate park, a creative touch from the Dutch owner that invites guests of all ages to try something new.
Throughout the villa, details like vibrant art, design and architecture books (many referencing Sri Lanka’s Geoffrey Bawa), and cozy reading nooks make it easy to find your own corner for a quiet coffee or to unplug with a book. Communal spaces like the poolside area under the disco ball, the garden with chickens roaming freely, or the open-plan pavilions, create natural gathering points for group dinners, games, or celebrations.
With the attentive villa team, including a dedicated manager, talented chef, and friendly housekeepers, every comfort is anticipated, leaving you free to focus on slow mornings, lively meals, sunset swims, and nights that drift from shared laughter to stargazing. Villa Sapphire is a rare space where architecture, nature, and playfulness blend seamlessly, making even large groups feel both deeply relaxed and completely at home.
What we loved
What stood out most about Villa Sapphire was how full of life and personality it was. Every room felt different — sometimes you’d step into a moody, dramatic suite with a freestanding bathtub and jungle views, and other times into a bright, sunny space filled with colour and art. The main pavilion was the heart of it all, where we’d gather for big Sri Lankan breakfasts, lazy coffee breaks, or sunset drinks by the pool.
One of the most fun parts of our stay was dinner by the pool. The whole villa glowed with soft lights, a disco ball spun overhead, and laughter mixed with music from a live DJ. On our night, we were treated to an amazing Kandyan dance show, complete with flips, fire tricks, and comedy that everyone could enjoy, no matter the language.
And then there was the skate park, a full-sized one, right on the property. We’ve never seen anything like it at another villa. It’s such an exciting space to have right there.
Between the skate park, hidden reading corners, playful pets, and all the thoughtful design details, the whole place felt fun and full of adventure. But there were also plenty of quiet spots like walking at sunrise to see the chickens, reading by the lake, or just floating in the incredible pool, looking out at the views. The staff made it all even better, always warm and helpful, serving delicious Sri Lankan breakfasts with hoppers and curries, or continental dishes, and helping arrange everything from private pool parties to tips on the best local cafes.
