Blyton Bungalow

The Place: Coorg

India’s Most Beautiful Nature Escape

What if a getaway wasn’t only about staying somewhere, but about belonging to a landscape? Blyton Bungalow offers exactly that. Set within the 200-acre Poomaale Estate in Coorg, this Kodava-inspired home is part of a conscious forest-agro collective where coffee plantations, age-old rainforests, Shola grasslands, waterfalls, and wildlife corridors form one living, breathing backdrop. This isn’t a private holiday home in isolation; it’s a way of experiencing life where human habitation and wilderness exist in balance.

Guests can wander through coffee trails, watch over 100 bird and animal species, or pause by streams and waterfalls tucked deep inside the estate. It’s a setting that invites exploration as much as it does reflection.

Inside the Stay

Blyton Bungalow has six bedrooms: two larger suites and four standard rooms. The suites come with mezzanine levels, making them ideal for families or groups of four. Every room is calm, simple, and welcoming, offering comfort without excess.

The house itself is built from locally sourced laterite stone with Mangalore-tiled roofs solid, time-tested materials that withstand Coorg’s long monsoons. Narrow in places, just 11 feet wide, it preserves the contours of the land and even two trees,  an avocado and a cocoa at the entrance. Built gradually over time, following the footprint of an older structure, the bungalow feels like it has always belonged to this forest.

The design borrows gently from local traditions. A small central courtyard, inspired by the Ainmane style, opens to the sky, where rainfall becomes a quiet performance as it disappears into stone. Balconies and lawns look outward into the forest, inviting you to linger with a cup of coffee, listen to the calls of birds, or watch streams wind their way through the estate.

What we loved

The true highlight of Blyton Bungalow is the experience of living within the estate. Each day unfolded with new encounters: guided walks through coffee plantations, biodiversity trails that revealed how birds, butterflies, and native trees shape the ecosystem, and farm-to-table meals showcasing jackfruit, pepper, cocoa, and estate-grown coffee.

One evening, a night trail led us to a hidden waterfall. Another morning, we brewed fresh coffee while hornbills flitted across the balcony. The small courtyard became a favorite spot, where watching rain slip through its open frame felt like a ritual.

Meals deserve special mention. From traditional Kodava dishes to inventive uses of produce like wild pepper and estate-grown cocoa, each plate carried the flavor of its surroundings. Dining here wasn’t just nourishment; it was part of the story of the land.
