Ivory House
Ivory House By Eden Villas
The Place : Angulugaha, Sri Lanka
Just 20 minutes from the turquoise sweep of Sri Lanka’s southern coast, Ivory House emerges like a dream at the edge of endless green rice paddies. In Angulugaha near Habaraduwa, this colonial-inspired private villa is more than a holiday home, it’s an immersive escape, inviting you into the gentle rhythms of rural Sri Lanka without giving up a shred of comfort. Sunlit verandas wrap around the house, birds call at dawn, and every room frames scenes of swaying palms and vibrant life.
Inside the Stay
Arriving at Ivory House is an experience of instant exhale: past sleepy lanes, you catch your first glimpse of whitewashed walls standing serene against vivid rice fields. From the moment you’re greeted by the villa’s warm team and step onto the shaded veranda, cooled by ceiling fans and scented with garden frangipani you’re drawn into its world.
Across four all-en-suite bedrooms (two spacious master suites and two cozy twins, perfect for families or friends), the design channels timeless Sri Lankan elegance: crisp linens on four-poster beds, polished concrete floors, and handpicked artwork mingling with plenty of daylight. Bathrooms feature open-air showers or deep bathtubs for luxurious unwinding in privacy.
The heart of the villa is its airy living and dining space. Floor-to-ceiling doors open fully to invite breezes and birdsong, while the indoor-outdoor design means you’re never far from nature. Mornings start with the aroma of fresh coffee (served from a French press) as you gaze out over a sea of shimmering green. Evenings find guests chatting at the huge wood dining table or curled up with a book in one of several garden nooks.
What we loved
What we loved most about our time at Ivory House was how instantly at home we felt, even though we were tucked away in the green heart of the Sri Lankan countryside. When we first stepped onto the wide, shaded veranda and looked out over the lush paddy fields, brilliant green and swaying in the breeze, it felt like entering another world. Each morning, we found ourselves drawn outside with our coffee (always French press, always excellent), just to watch peacocks wander along the little wall by the fields as the day slowly began. It’s honestly hard to describe how soothing this routine becomes, especially with the gentle background sounds of birds and village life.
Inside, the living room didn’t focus on the TV, it was turned towards the view, so the TV faded into the background (in fact, none of us even remembered it was there until the very end of our stay). The open, minimal interiors, decorated in crisp whites and dotted with some thoughtfully chosen art and books, always felt airy and calming, never cluttered or stuffy. There was something special about how each room opened so effortlessly to the outdoors, letting you move fluidly from the cool inside to the sunlit veranda, and then out into the garden.
The pool deserves a special mention, it was a huge, inviting stretch of water lined up perfectly with the paddy in front, and that one palm tree in the middle gave it a stunning, “wow” factor every time we glanced its way. The chef and manager always made us feel looked after, serving fresh meals that were honestly delicious (Sri Lankan breakfasts quickly grew on us, even the breakfast curry, which was new for us!).
